Take Home Point #33: Know Your Numbers in the NAC-OSCE Exam

· NAC OSCE Exam,Conversion Factors,BMI,Common Mistakes,Measurements

If you're like me, you get overwhelmed by numbers and even more so by everyday conversions. I, myself, refer to a helpful magnet with a table of conversion factors on my fridge whenever I am baking just in case I forget the tricks and formulas for basic conversions.

During the past few years of NAC-OSCE case-based practice with IMGs, I have seen many miscalculations occur especially when calculating a patient's BMI. Further, confusion or errors arise in pediatric cases. I often see ounces (imperial) which is commonly used for quantifying an infant's food intake confused with milliliters (metric) which are generally used for dosing liquid medication. These mistakes can greatly impact the outcome of your station. So, it's best to prevent making conversion mistakes altogether.

Since we cannot bring a table of conversion factors to the NAC-OSCE exam, I highly recommend familiarizing yourself with conversion factors. The easiest solution is to know your numbers and memorize common conversion factors prior to the NAC-OSCE exam.
